Panel-Diskussion with Tolga Bölükbaşı, Tim Dorlach, Burcu Ünüvar und Funda Tekin (Chair).
The event series "Jour Fixe: Turkey in the 21st Century" is back! On a regular basis there will be panel discussions on current issues related to Turkey again. The kick-off focuses on the Turkish economy.
Only a few years ago, Turkey was one of the world's fastest growing economic powers, attracting international investors. Income per capita more than doubled from 2003 to 2010, and many Turks profited from improving living standards. For some time, however, the country has been facing increasing economic problems. In 2016, the unemployment rate rose from 10.8% to 12.7%, and the Turkish lira tremendously lost value.
Our panelists will discuss these developments and offer insights as well as prospects concerning the political economy in Turkey. How can the economic upswing in the first decade of the 21st century be explained? Is the current decline a temporary trend or a fundamental change? Which factors have a crucial impact on further development? To what extent is the social system in Turkey able to soften the impact of this economic decline on individuals? How will the economic situation in Turkey influence the relationship with the European Union and Germany?
The panel will be conducted in German and Turkish with simultaneous translation. There will be a reception afterwards.
The event is co-organized by the programme "Blickwechsel: Contemporary Turkey Studies", Network Turkey, and GeT MA, the German Turkish Masters Program in Social Sciences and funded by Stiftung Mercator.
