Mercator Centre Berlin - Neue Promenade 6, 10178

The objective of the public forum is to bring together academics and civil society groups interested in issues around fostering diversity and pluralism and opening up communities to newcomers. You find the program here.

We are interested in understanding why, how and under what conditions some communities are more open to cultural differences than others and what types of projects and policies facilitate openness to newcomers. Within this context, the role of the arts and other forms of cultural production (such as kitchen projects, cafes and work projects) play an important role. Participants will reflect conceptually and on specific projects about how civil society initiatives can act as alternative sites from which to challenge notions of who does and does not belong in the community and foster inclusionary ways of living together.

This public forum is organized by Istanbul Policy Center (IPC), Blickwechsel Türkei (Contemporary Turkey Studies, funded by Stiftung Mercator), Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council in Canada.
