Academic freedom does not automatically flourish in the absence of political oppression. It relies on an academic environment and community that resists threats posed by economic precarity, hierarchical organization, funding mechanisms that privilege certain fields of study as well as discrimination on the basis of race, gender, ethnicity and class. On the eve of the International Women's Day, we wish to discuss the situation of gender studies as a distinct area of research under threat, including examples from Germany, Turkey and other countries. A participative format (fishbowl) will foster exchange between invited contributors and the audience.
