Across the globe, researchers are increasingly facing attacks on academic freedom, or on freedom of speech more generally, ranging from threats against individuals, court cases and imprisonment to discourses delegitimizing entire disciplines and fields of research.

While Europe has recently been a major destination for academics under threat, promising a secure environment for research and life, it is by no means immune to such challenges. With populist movements and parties gaining influence in many European countries, research environments, here too, are becoming more hostile and pressure on scholars increases.

In how far are universities in Europe ready to defend academic freedom in the light of these developments? In times of mounting pressure, how can they create and safeguard productive conditions for free and critical research? more

News from the Research Projects

The research project How Social is Turkey? published a new blog article on "Why has there been no reform of severance pay in Turkey?"  The blog article can be accessed in English and Turkish. If you want to have a look at their other blog articles and working papers you can visit the project's website here.

The research project How social is Turkey? will present research findings at the 4th International Conference on Public Policy in Montreal, Canada, on June 26-28, 2019: Social Policy Instruments Beyond the 'Three Worlds': Substantive Findings, Conceptual Issues and Methodological Challenges.

Prof. Dr. Ece Göztepe (Head of the research lab Constitutional Politics II) gave a radio interview in German on democracy in Turkey, rule of law and international reactions: "Fatal signals to the turkish population"

The research lab fellow Aylin Aydın-Çakır published a new article on "The impact of judicial preferences and political context on constitutional court decisions".

The Unit for Intercultural Education at the University of Bremen (Project Women's and Gender Studies at Universities in Turkey) is delighted to announce the Summer School "Women's and Gender Studies in Turkey: The Past, Present and Future" to be held between July 1-5, 2019 at the University of Bremen. Application deadline is April, 9.

The Project Women's and Gender Studies at Universities in Turkey published a statement in German on the occasion of the International Women's Day (March, 8): Women's and Gender Studies in Turkey under threat.
